July 2007

Last night we stayed at my grandfather’s farm which is just East of Swift Current, SK on the #1. It had been years since I’d seen the place and it was so strange to return. Imagine re-visiting your elementary school after 20 years of absence. It’s like exploring the set of a movie you’ve watched over and over: it’s hard to believe you were ever there despite the familiarity you feel.

In an attempt to showcase the magic of my youth, we ate Plume Mouse (Eeek – I don’t know how to spell that!) and some of grandpa’s amazing apricot jam. We walked through the junk yard. We fed the horse while two imposing bulls looked on (turns out one of them was lame though so I really didn’t have much to fear… <- sarcastic!). But it wasn’t a complete recap of my childhood: I managed to make it back to the farmhouse without ripping my jeans!

After a great stopover we made our way to Medicine Hat, the new home of Darren’s favorite Donairs. And he should be considered an esteemed judge of such things. Please see the photographic evidence I collected. Obviously a man of impeccable taste… (Samirs Donair on Carry Drive SE)

Samir’s Donair
Doesn’t that look good?

Tonight I played a show at The Doghouse. They had good water and the chef made a mean bruschetta. Yup.

The most exclusive public washroom in Medicine Hat…

We were 600 kms into the tour when the cell phone rang: Bad news. Really, really bad news. So we got out of the car, we smelled the amazing fresh air, we stared at the beauty of southern Saskatchewan. It’s almost obscene how life goes on, with no glitch or hesitation…

Here are the lyrics of a song I’d written for a woman who passed away Sunday July 29, 2007.

When you finish fallingPrairie sunset
I know he’ll help you stand
I know he’ll help you up
I know he’ll always hold your hand
And when he brings you to the top
And pushes you again
I know you’ll have forgotten
By the time you land

When you’re down and out
On your own and trouble
Holding on and holding up
I can give you love
My love won’t be enough

Though it’s very dark here
You know your way around
You’ve settled like the dust
You’re familiar with the ground
And though you long to find the light
You fear the light will let you down
And so you kneel among the rocks
And pray you’re never found

CHORUS

I can’t stay here
I can’t stay here
I can’t stay here anymore

So when you’ve finished falling
He’ll help you stand again
He’ll push you down again
He’ll lift you up again
I’ll hear you cry again
I’ll hear you cry again
I’ll hear you cry again

Welcome to my new blog page!

Here’s my first step away from MySpace, the online community whose hold on me is similar to the relationship I have with McDonald’s french fries: I don’t want them in the first place, but can’t stop once I’ve started. (The nausea often helps…)

I find this setting much more calm and inspiring, with fewer personal ads. (fewer?) Feel free to leave comments without having to sign up to a 3rd party website. And please don’t fail to notice how organized I’ve become. Check out my categories!

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to drag my old comments along. What a pity! Those responses are proof that there’s someone out there interested in my day-to-day ramblings. It would be great to start this new page with that kind of credibility…

While I won’t be posting on MySpace anymore, for all my friends who remain in its clutches I will still create links each time I blog. I invite the rest of you to register for notifications by using the option under the META menu which is located in the bottom right corner.

In the top right corner you’ll notice a link to my Tour Dates. On this page you can stay up-to-date with where I’m writing from, offer suggestions for fun things to do while I’m in a particular town, or give me advice on any sweet venues I might be overlooking. All are enthusiastically encouraged!

And in this corner, weighing in at a terrifying 100 pounds, you’ll find me. Please enjoy my blog responsibly…
